With the experience of more than 4,100 projects, Herrenknecht is a technology and market leader in the area of mechanized tunneling technology for all ground conditions and in all diameters – ranging from 0.10 to 19 meters.

The product range includes tailor-made machines for traffic, supply and disposal tunnels, technologies for pipeline installation as well as drilling equipment for vertical and inclined shafts and deep drilling rigs.

As a reliable project partner, Herrenknecht supports its customers with an extensive range of services from the initial project idea through manufacturing, transport, assembly, tunneling support and spare parts service to disassembly.

Even personnel solutions for the supplementing of jobsite crews are provided if required. With competent service specialists and more than 40 years of experience in the tunneling industry, the company supports around 300 jobsites worldwide and offers customized service packages tailored to individual project requirements.

AVN Machine

Geology: soft ground, heterogeneous ground, rock
Diameter: 0.4-4.8m
- Usable in almost all ground conditions and with high water pressures
- Highest tunneling safety due to hydraulic tunnel face support
- Ideal technology for tunneling in the non-man-entry diameter range (microtunnelling)
- Precise control even with small radii in vertical and horizontal curves
- Very long pipe jacking stretches of more than 1,000 m are possible with the use of intermediate jacking stations

The city in new dimensions
How do people want to live in metropolises that are getting increasingly larger and more complex? Already more than half the world's population lives in cities. By 2050 it is expected to be seven out of ten billion people. But space is limited – making it worth living in nevertheless is our greatest task in the 21st century. And so plans for this are being drawn up around the world. They make it clear that a hitherto neglected dimension is increasingly coming to the fore: the underground.

As early as the 19th century, the metropolises of Europe and North America reached a critical size. Thanks to construction measures – sewers, water supply lines, street lighting, the first subways – they were able to continue to grow. But their infrastructures are no longer efficient enough. Cities are again seeking and finding the solution underground: London has has built 42 km of tunnel with its new Crossrail line. The Paris metro network is being extended by around 200 km. Optimizing energy consumption in tunnelling
In times of climate change and rising energy costs, it is vital to develop energy-saving alternatives. Because in the past energy prices have been lower, less attention was paid to the issue of "energy efficiency" than will be the case in future.

In the years to come, energy-saving tunnel boring machines will play an increasingly essential role in the economic viability of tunnel projects. Moving forward, our goal is therefore to produce tunnel boring machines in as environmentally and resource-friendly a way as possible.

Herrenknecht AG is taking up this challenge and developing energy-efficient and energy cost-saving tunnel boring machines. The aim is to sustainably reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Further reading
